Advantages of AutoSSL for your customers |
|
AutoSSL helps your customers securely access their files and media from anywhere using any device. This is attractive, because people are more aware of security issues and demand easy-to-use and secure transmission of private information over the Internet. However, customers of consumer devices are rarely technically proficient enough to set this up themselves. AutoSSL enables this secure and easy access by automating the difficult processes of provisioning and installing SSL certificates and setting up the customer’s hostname. AutoSSL can provide the following services to your customers: Hostname
| Each customer receives a customized hostname for the device so that it can be accessed remotely over the Internet. This hostname is a subdomain of a domain name you control. The customer can choose a meaningful subdomain. For instance, suppose that the Acme Webcam Company uses AutoSSL and owns the domain acmewebcam.com. If the Smith family buys an Acme Webcam, they can register the subdomain SmithFamily.acmewebcam.com for remotely accessing their Webcam. Providing a customizable name that is easy for customers to remember is a tangible benefit.
| | | You must own or license one or more domains to use as a basis for creating the customer hostnames. The domain name should be meaningful and easy for your customers to remember, such as a product name or a product description. You may use a domain that you already own, or you can license one of several domains we already own, including:
- SecureHomeServer.com
- ApacheSecure.com
- GoToMyVPN.com
- ClickMyPictures.com
- GoToMyNAS.com
- RemoteNAS.com
- GoToMyHomeServer.com
| Dynamic DNS service | A Dynamic DNS (DDNS) service monitors the IP address that a customer's device uses and dynamically modifies the DNS binding when necessary. This service is necessary because consumer-oriented ISPs typically do not guarantee how long an IP address is assigned to a customer: They change it as needed. This service is available from several companies as a standalone service for consumers, sometimes for a fee. It usually requires the user to install and configure a DDNS client. In contrast, AutoSSL does not require user setup of its service.
| Trusted SSL certificate | AutoSSL customers receive an SSL certificate signed by a trusted Certificate Authority, so that all communication with the device is encrypted and secure. This service is unique to AutoSSL, because it is completely automated:
- Customers are not involved in SSL certificate vetting.
- Customers do not directly configure the Web server to use the certificate.
A few seconds after the customer begins configuration, the certificate is automatically provisioned and installed.
| Note: These three services cost considerably more when sold separately than when purchased as part of the AutoSSL package. AutoSSL also completely automates the processes to install these services, something that your customers are sure to appreciate. |
